Bevica Fonden invites students and lecturers at Danish universities, university colleges and design schools to take part in the Bevica Scholarship Programme. The programme supports innovative and bold thinkers to investigate how their profession can contribute to the development of universal design as a lever for the pledge in the Sustainable Development Goals to Leave No One Behind in the journey towards a more inclusive and sustainable society for all – regardless of ability.
Our society needs to be more inclusive in many areas and arenas. Products, environments, programmes, and services are designed for idealised average persons and use – supporting some and leaving others behind. This scholarship programme calls for multidisciplinary action, in the quest to acknowledge that living with different and changing abilities, permanent or temporary, is a human condition we all share, and that all aspects of our society should accommodate for this.
The Bevica Scholarship Programme thus encourages passionate and talented students and lecturers from a wide range of disciplines – from social service professions and humanities to political sciences, law, IT, design and beyond – to engage in a joint quest to create a sustainable and inclusive society by embracing differences and leaving no one behind.
Students
How do we create a more inclusive society embracing everyone, regardless of ability? How can universal design contribute to the process? And what new knowledge is needed to do so?
The Bevica Scholarship Programme challenge participating students to ideate and define a relevant problem statement for investigation to answer these questions. Participants will define and elaborate on their problem statement and identify a relevant international knowledge environment in which the problem can be further investigated.
Following workshops, online self-studies and sparring with experts, and peers, participating students individually:
Regardless of the disciplinary background and interest of the participating student, investigations should:
By addressing these overall objectives, participants ideate, refine, and pitch their individual investigative project for evaluation by an international and interdisciplinary jury.
Bevica Scholarships are granted to students that excel in their ambition to innovate and demonstrate: inclusive approaches to human beings and explore Universal design as a value-based design principle that supports the pledge to Leave No One Behind in a future sustainable society.
Lecturers
How can Universal design contribute to a more inclusive society? How can teaching at Danish research-based universities, university colleges, or design schools support this quest? And what new knowledge is needed to take action?
The Bevica Scholarship Programme challenges lecturers to answer these questions, through an investigative international exchange visit, to gather knowledge about how the principle of Universal design can inform and expand their teaching activities and curricula in a Danish context.
As defined by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Universal design is ‘the design of products, environments, programmes, and services to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design’. Hence, teaching Universal design is a multifaceted and multidisciplinary task involving a wide range of disciplines addressing key aspects of our daily lives.
During the Bevica Scholarship Programme, lecturers will ideate and define their own investigative exchange visit to an ideal international research-based university, university college, or design school, and argue how their visit will stimulate and strengthen their teaching activities and curricula development within Universal design, towards a more inclusive society for all.
Following workshops, online self-study and sparring with experts, and peers, participating lecturers individually:
Regardless of the disciplinary background and interest of the participating lecturer, investigations should serve to strengthen teaching that:
By addressing these overall objectives, lecturers ideate, refine, and pitch their individual investigative project for evaluation by an international and interdisciplinary jury.
Bevica Fellowships are granted to lecturers that excel in their ambition to innovate teaching practices, policies, and subjects in a Danish context. Theese innovations must demonstrate inclusive approaches to human beings, explores Universal design as a value-based design principle, and, ultimately, support the pledge to Leave No One Behind in a future sustainable society.
Students and lecturers are invited to sign up for the Bevica Scholarship Programme by 10 January 2023.
Both the student and the lecturer programmes are structured in three phases:
The initial Ideation phase of the scholarship programme consists of a mix of two one-day workshops, online self-study modules and hands-on sparring with experts and peers from February – May 2023. Workshops will be all day events and in-person attendance are a requirement.
On 1 May 2023, participants submit their preliminary project proposal for review by an interdisciplinary and international jury.
Shortlisted participants enter Creation from June – September 2023, involving a two-day workshop event and sparring with mentors and peers on their individual project proposals before the final submission of projects on 1 September 2023.
On 4 October 2023, shortlisted participants pitch their projects at a knowledge symposium and award ceremony.
Recipients of the Bevica Scholarship awards then begin their investigations in an international context of their own choosing, resulting in new knowledge to be disseminated during and after their investigation journey.
